Outdoor entertaining season is finally upon us! Many of us have already begun thinking about pulling our outdoor spaces together, in anticipation of family BBQ’s, pool days and warm Summer nights spent outside with our favorite beverage in hand.
Designing a great Outdoor Living Space takes just as much thought, planning and consideration as designing an interior. Today, I’m sharing a few of my favorite tips for creating a beautiful and functional outdoor living space.
1.Create Conversation Areas with High Quality, Comfortable and Stylish Seating
Comfortable seating is King when it comes to designing the perfect outdoor space. When choosing outdoor furniture, my first rule of thumb is this… you get what you pay for. Investing in high quality outdoor furniture and seating is key to creating a space where family and friends will want to gather and stay a while. Wether your space calls for a sofa, sectional, club chairs or all of the above, choosing quality pieces, made of good materials, is essential for creating an outdoor living paces that will be comfortable, beautiful and functional. Placing furniture around an outdoor coffee table or fire pit helps to define a conversation area and allows it to flow.
Durable pieces made of materials like Teak, Aluminum, Wrought Iron and Resin Wicker will endure the elements and provide a look that fit with most any style. One of my favorite manufacturers of Outdoor Furnishing is Summer Classics. Summer Classics’ quality and craftsmanship are unparalleled. Their pieces are made from the finest materials and most of their seating pieces are customizable, to ensure you are getting furniture that is tailored to your level of comfort. As a designer, I am always looking high quality Outdoor Furniture which is also high on style. Summer Classics offers a wide range of styles, making it my first choice when designing Outdoor Spaces for Clients.
2. Add a Pop of Color
The most gorgeous colors in the world come from nature, so it is only fitting to bring some of that color into your outdoor space. This can be done in a variety of ways. I tend to gravitate towards a neutral palette on my outdoor furnishings themselves, but many people love the pop and interest brightly colored cushions can bring to an outdoor sofa or chair. If your are like me, and love neutrals with a pop, using colorful throw pillows, a beautiful patterned outdoor rug or even a few colorful garden stools, can add life and interest to your outdoor space. Be sure to sprinkle your accent color(s) throughout your space in order to make it feel well designed and cohesive.
3. Provide Areas for Shade
If you are lucky enough to have a covered patio or deck, you’ve got this one covered, but even if you don’t, making sure you have shaded areas in your outdoor living area can be easily done. Large outdoor umbrellas are a relatively inexpensive way to provide shade for your guests during those hot summer daytime hours. A large shade tree can also be planted to provide relief from the heat, while enhancing the natural beauty of your surroundings. If you are handy, constructing a pergola might be a good option for you. Pergolas can add tons of architectural interest to the rear of a home, while also providing shade, when needed. I also love seeing pergolas that have lights hanging from them. 🙂
I hope these tips are helpful for creating your perfect outdoor living space!
